Common in Germany, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Switzerland and Austria, but actually misleading synonym for Müller-Thurgau due to the paternity that has been clarified in the meantime. The name was formed from the alleged parents RI(esling) x (Sil)VANER; the father variety is not, however, the Silvaner as previously assumed. In Germany, however, in some growing regions such as Franconia, the term Rivaner is also used to describe a special style of vinification of Müller-Thurgau wines, namely cool fermentation and dry vinification. However, this has no legal meaning for wine law.
