The winery "Bodegas Roda" is located in the city of Haro in the heart of the Spanish Rioja sub-region Rioja Alta. It was founded in 1987 by the Rotllant-Daurella family, who have been in the wine trade for a long time. From the very beginning they have been oriented towards the highest quality standards. The vineyards cover 60 hectares of vineyards, most of which were replanted with the classic Rioja varieties Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Graciano and Mazuelo at the beginning of the 1990s. The vines are too young for first-class Riojas, so they will not be used until 2010 to 2015 at the earliest, and the grapes will be sold to other producers for the time being. The first wine production took place in 1991, but due to the unsatisfactory quality it never reached the market. In the following year 1992, knowing the mistakes made before, they really only bought the best and oldest vintage of Rioja. In this way, absolutely exceptional qualities were achieved.

In the meantime, some very old vineyards near Haro have been leased. Vinification is done in the traditional way, with fermentation in new French oak vats. There are 2,000 barrique barrels of exclusively French oak available for ageing. New barrels are used for the most part (not a matter of course for Rioja). The "Roda I" is vinified pure from Tempranillo of at least 30 years old vines of the best barrels and matured for 16 months in barriques 50% new and 50% once used. The "Roda II" is blended from Tempranillo of the good barrels and 25% Garnacha Tinta. All wines that do not meet the requirements for a Roda are sold as cask wines to other producers. The newest product is the "Cirsion", which was first introduced to the market in 1998. Therefore an extreme selection of the oldest and only the best grapes is carried out. For the 1998er this was only an incredible five kilograms per hectare.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
