The winery is located in the municipality of Riol (Bernkastel area) in the German wine-growing region of Mosel. It is run by master winemaker Franz-Peter Schmitz. The vineyards cover eight hectares of vines in the Maximiner Herrenberg (Longuich), the namesake Römerberg (Riol), and Blattenberg and Zellerberg (Mehring) sites. They are planted with the two white wine varieties Riesling and Müller-Thurgau, as well as the two red wine varieties Frühburgunder and Spätburgunder. Natural viticulture is practised. While the dry to fruity-sweet Rieslings are matured in stainless steel, the red wines and the noble sweet Rieslings mature in large wooden barrels and partly also in barrique barrels. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines and noble brandies are also produced.
