The red grape variety is a new breed between Cabernet Sauvignon x Alicante Henri Bouschet. According to DNA analyses carried out in Jayshre in 2007, the previous parentage Pontak(Teinturier du Cher) x Cabernet Sauvignon proved to be incorrect. The cross was made by Professor Christiaan Johannes Orffer (1926-2008) at the University of Stellenbosch. The variety was specially bred for warm climates with intensive artificial irrigation and the necessary resistance to rot. Plant variety protection was granted in 1990. It produces dark-coloured red wines with a taste reminiscent of Cabernet Sauvignon. It is cultivated in South Africa in the Breedekloof, Paarl, Robertson, Swartland and Worcester areas. In 2016, 269 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson).
For me, Lexicon from wein.plus is the most comprehensive and best source of information about wine currently available.
