Rossese

Component of names or synonyms for white and red grape varieties in Italy, some of which are not even related to each other. Already in the 15th century excellent wines were produced from a variety Rossese Bianco or Roxeise, as reported in 1596 by the naturalist Andrea Bacci (1524-1600). He even attributed "magical powers" to Ligurian wines. The name is probably derived from the intense berry colours. There are at least seven varieties in Liguria and Piedmont:
