DOC area for red wine in the Italian region of Tuscany. The zone covers a part of the municipality of Montepulciano in the province of Siena. From the 2019 vintage onwards, the designation was supplemented on the label with "Toscana". This is to avoid confusion with the DOCG wine Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane (Abruzzo). The wine is made from the Sangiovese clone Prugnolo Gentile (zum. 70%), as well as other authorised varieties (max. 30%, of which max. 10% are white varieties). One of the most famous Italian red wines, the DOCG wine Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, is produced under much stricter conditions.
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
