Rossola Nera

The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Rossera, Rossola, Rossoladure and Rossolo. It should not be confused with the varieties Monastrell (with synonym Rossola Nera), Rossara Trentina, Rossignola or Rossolino Nero, despite seemingly suggestive synonyms or similarities in name. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2004, it is a direct descendant of Nebbiolo, as well as a parent of Rossolino Nero. The late-maturing vine is susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis, but resistant to spring frosts. The variety is cultivated in the Valtellina valley in Lombardy, where it is often blended with Nebbiolo. The area under cultivation in 2016 was 29 hectares with a falling trend (Kym Anderson).
