Rotenberg

single vineyard in the municipality of Altenbamberg in the German wine-growing region of Nahe. The name is derived from the reddish coloured soil (Rotliegendes) The southwest to south-facing vineyards at 150 to 200 metres above sea level with 5 to 70% slopes cover six hectares of vineyards in the Alsenz Valley (a Nahe side valley). The soils consist of weathered quartz porphyry with the eponymous red sandstone, slate clay in the subsoil and overlying poor topsoil with a high rock content. The forest at the height of the ridge offers protection from cold winds. Riesling is the main variety cultivated here. The Anheuser Paul, Gut Hermannsberg and Rapp Walter wineries, for example, have shares in the site.
