Rothbury Estate

The winery is located in Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley in the state of New South Wales in Australia. It was founded in 1968 by the well-known Australian winemaker and wine journalist Len Evans (1930-2006), who put a state-of-the-art winery into operation two years later. Especially the long-lived Sémillon established the reputation and success of the winery. Subsequently, the wineries Bailey's, St. Huberts and Saltram were taken over. Due to prolonged periods of drought and consequently poor yields, the estate ran into financial difficulties. In 1995, despite fierce opposition from Evans, Rothbury Estate was hostilely taken over by Mildara Blass, after which Len Evans withdrew. Mildara Blass was then absorbed by the drinks multinational Foster's in 1996. In May 2011, Foster's spun off all its wine activities into a separate listed company called Treasury Wine Estates, which now includes Rothbury. The vineyards cover about 300 hectares of vines in the Hunter Valley, Cowra, Mudgee and Orange areas. The varieties grown are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sémillon, Shiraz and Verdelho. The cellar master is Neil McGuigan.
