Rouge de Fully

The red grape variety originates from the border region Italy/Switzerland. Synonyms are Durize and Vieux Rouge de Fully. It should not be confused with the Vien de Nus variety (with synonym Rouge de Fully). The variety was widespread in the Swiss canton of Valais around the municipality of Fully until the end of the 19th century and then went out of fashion. DNA analyses carried out by the Swiss biologist Dr. José Vouillamoz in 2009 showed that there is a close relationship with the variety Roussin from the neighbouring Italian Aosta Valley, from where the variety may also have originated. In Switzerland, it is counted among the old plants grape variety group. The late ripening vine is susceptible to powdery mildew, but resistant to botrytis. It produces a spicy, tannic red wine with fresh acidity and fruity aromas of blackberries and strawberries. The variety, now threatened with extinction, is grown in tiny stands in the municipalities of Fully and Saillon. In 2016, a vineyard area of 0.7 hectares was designated (statistics Kym Anderson).
