Rougeon

The red grape variety (also Seibel 5898) is a complex interspecific new variety between Jaeger 70 (Munson) x Seibel 3015 (Bayard x Afus Ali). It contains genes from Vitis aestivalis, Vitis labrusca, Vitis lincecumii, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed by the French breeder Albert Seibel (1844-1936). The late-ripening vine is resistant to downy mildew. It yields light red wines that are mainly used as blending partners. The variety is cultivated in the US states of Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, New York and Pennsylvania. In 2016, a total of 21 hectares of vineyards were reported in the USA, with a strong downward trend (Kym Anderson statistics).
