Roussin

The red grape variety originates from the border region Italy/Switzerland. Synonyms are Gros Roussin, Picciou Roussin and Rossé. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2005, it is a direct descendant of the Rouge du Pays variety. There is a close genetic link to the Rouge de Fully variety in the Swiss Valais, but not to the Roussin de Morgex variety. And according to DNA analyses carried out in 2010, it is a parent of the variety Neret di Saint-Vincent (Neyret). The variety was first mentioned by the ampelographer Lorenzo F. Gatta in 1838. In Switzerland, it is counted among the group of old growths. The late-ripening vine produces garnet-red, fragrant red wines. It is cultivated in small quantities in the Italian regions of Aosta Valley, Molise, Tuscany, Sicily and Veneto. In 2016, a total of two hectares of vines were recorded (Kym Anderson).
