The white grape variety is a new cross between Ruländer (Pinot Gris) x Riesling. Synonyms and breeding numbers are Weinsberg S 385 and WE S 385. The cross was made in 1955 by August Herold (1902-1973) at the Staatliche Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt Weinsberg in Württemberg. The name is derived from the first and last syllables of the parents. Plant variety protection was granted in 1985. The late-maturing vine produces a strong white wine. There are only the smallest stocks; in 2016, however, no stock was reported (Kym Anderson statistics).
