Ryugan

The white grape variety probably originates from China. According to one hypothesis, it was introduced from there to Japan in the 19th century. According to the VIVC catalogue, it is identical to the Longyan variety. However, the morphological descriptions are different. The late-ripening vine is susceptible to botrytis. It yields white wines with balanced acidity and pear aroma. The variety is mainly cultivated in the Japanese prefecture of Nagano (main island of Honshu) and used as a wine grape variety and table grape. In 2016, 27 hectares of vineyard area were designated (Kym Anderson statistics).
