The red grape variety originates from France. Synonyms are Bouton Blanc, Moustère and Moustouzère. However, Saint-Macaire is also a synonym for the Merlot variety. The parentage is unknown. The medium-maturing vine is susceptible to powdery mildew. It yields a deep coloured, acidic red wine. Named after a commune in the Gironde, the variety was first mentioned in 1763. It was quite common here in the 19th century. Today it is threatened with extinction. In 2016, only one stock in Australia with six hectares of vineyards was designated (Kym Anderson).
