Name (also Salmanassar, Salmanasar, Shalmaneser) of an oversized bottle for a champagne with a volume of nine litres or the content of 12 normal bottles. However, the name is not origin-protected, but can be used freely for sparkling wines or wines. It is derived from the Assyrian king Salmanassar V (reigned 727-722 BC), who conquered Israel (northern kingdom of the Jews) in 722 BC and made it a province of Assyria. See lists under bottles (all sizes) and wine vessels (all types, from antiquity to the present day).

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
