The first vines in modern times were planted in 2001 in Großgmain am Untersberg, a massif in the Berchtesgaden Alps. The vineyards cover seven hectares of vineyards on Untersberg, on a vineyard of the Benedictine Michaelbeuern in the parish of the same name and on the Mönchsberg in the city of Salzburg. On the latter since 2008, the "Paris Lodron kennel" grows Frühroter Veltliner, who produces around 500 bottles from this vineyard.
