San Michele (grape variety)

The red grape variety is a new variety between Chatus (Nebbiolo di Dronero) x Barbera. Synonyms are Dalmasso 15/34, Incrocio Dalmasso 15/34 and S. Michele. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2010, the breeding list entry Nebbiolo x Barbera turned out to be wrong. The cross was made in 1936 in Conegliano (Veneto) by Giovanni Dalmasso (1886-1974). The same parents also produced the new varieties Albarossa, Cornarea, Nebbiera and Soperga. The late-ripening vine is moderately susceptible to botrytis. It is cultivated in the Piedmont region. In 2016, 377 hectares of vines were reported with a strong downward trend (Kym Anderson statistics).
