DOC area for an extremely extensive range of red, rosé and white wines in the Italian region of Campania. It is named after the historical and geographical region in the southern Apennines inhabited in ancient times by the Samnite tribe. There is also a municipality called San Giorgio del Sannio. From the 2012 vintage, the wines of the four DOC areas Guardia Sanframondi (Guardiolo), Sant'Agata de' Goti, Solopaca and Taburno, which were thus abandoned, were included. The large zone covers the entire province of Benevento with around 80 municipalities with the subzones Guardia Sanframondi (Guardiolo), Sant'Agata dei Goti, Solopaca, Solopaca Classico and Taburno. Their names are listed on the bottle label after the DOC designation Sannio. There are some differences in the product range for each subzone.

Bianco is made from Trebbiano Toscano and/or Malvasia Bianca di Candia (at least 50%), as well as other authorised varieties. Rosso (also as Novello and Riserva) and Rosato are blended from Sangiovese (to. 50%), as well as other authorised varieties, if applicable. The single-varietal wines must contain at least 85% of the respective variety. These are Aglianico, Barbera, Coda di Volpe (Bianca), Falanghina, Fiano, Greco, Moscato = Muscat Blanc, Piedirosso and Sciascinoso. There is also an Aglianico-Piedirosso (also as Rosato) from Aglianico and/or Piedirosso. Many of these wines also come in passito, frizzante and spumante varieties. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, Vigna can be indicated followed by the vineyard name. In around 30 municipalities in the four subzones, the DOC designation Falanghina del Sannio, newly created in 2011, can be used as an alternative.
