Santa Maria

The white grape variety comes from Italy. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2010, it is a presumably natural cross between Vernaccia di Oristano x Pensicato. The mother variety is surprising because it has never been cultivated outside the island of Sardinia. It must not be confused with the morphologically similar Melara variety. The early to medium ripening vine has been known since 1768 in the province of Piacenza in the region of Emilia-Romagna. There it is registered in the DOC wine Colli Piacentini. The variety is no longer of any importance; in 2016, only two hectares of vineyards were planted, and the trend is still downward (Kym Anderson statistics).
