The "Viña Santa Monica" winery is located on the outskirts of the town of Rancagua in the Rapel area (Valle del Rapel) in Chile. It was founded in 1976 by Emilio de Solminihac through the purchase of the Bodega Purísima, which had existed since 1930, and renamed in honour of his wife Monica Fonseca. After graduating in agricultural engineering in Chile, he had studied oenology under Prof. Émile Peynaud at the University of Bordeaux. He returned to Chile in the early 1970s, founded an oenological laboratory to advise local wineries and also taught oenology and winemaking as a professor at the Universidad de Chile. The vineyards in the Colchagua sub-area cover around 100 hectares of vines. They are planted with the red wine varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Merlot, as well as the white wine varieties Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. The premium wine of the house is the red wine "Tierra del Sol" (Cabernet Sauvignon).
There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
