The municipal appellation for red and white wines is located in the southern part of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. It covers about 325 hectares of vineyards in the two communes of Santenay and partly Remigny. It adjoins Chassagne-Montrachet. Santenay is also a famous spa town with a saline medicinal spring with the most lithium-rich water in Europe. Over 95% of the red wines are made from Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Liébault; the few white wines are made from Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. Beauregard (33 ha), Clos de Tavannes (26 ha), La Comme Dessous, La Maladière (13 ha) and Les Gravières (29 ha) are considered the best Premier Cru sites.
