Canton with the main town of the same name in the northeast of the Switzerland, The vineyards cover around 500 hectares of vines in over 20 communities and belong to the wine region German Switzerland, There are the five areas Klettgau with Beringen, Gächlingen, Hallau (150 hectares are the largest contiguous vineyards in German-speaking Switzerland), Löhningen, Oberhallau, Osterfingen, Siblingen, Trasadingen and Wilchingen; Schaffhausen; Schaffhausen area with Altdorf SH, Bibern SH, Dörflingen and Thayngen; Upper part of the canton with Stein am Rhein (where the Rhine flows out of Lake Constance); as well as the lower part of the canton with Buchberg and Rüdlingen. Pinot Noir clearly dominates on 80% of the vineyard area. Other varieties are Riesling x Sylvaner (Müller-Thurgau), Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Räusling and Kerner. There are around 900 micro vintners, most of whom are from Winzergenossenschaften deliver. They produce 85% of the wines. A specialty are the “Goldsätät Spätlesen”, which are harvested at least ten days after the main harvest.
