The new wine growing area in Germany was approved in 2008. Strictly speaking, however, it is not a growing region, since no quality wine may be produced here. A total of ten hectares of vineyards can be used for viticulture, which was made possible by the waiver of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. A "Schleswig-Holstein Country Wine" may be produced here. The Rheingau winery was the first use Ress Balthazar on the North Sea island of Sylt, part of Schleswig-Holstein, in the municipality of Keitum vineyards. It is the northernmost vineyard Germany.
