One of the classified Grand Cru positions in the Alsace (Haut-Rhin) within the appellation Alsace Grand Cru which was first classified in 1975. It was mentioned as early as the 15th century. Long before the later Appellationsregelung in 1928, the local winemakers set quality-increasing production restrictions. The vineyards cover about 80 hectares of vineyards in 230 to 350 meters above sea level on siliceous soils in the communities Kientzheim and Kaysersberg. For the most part here is the Riesling, as well as the varieties Pinot gris. Gewurztraminer and Muscat Blanc cultured. Well-known producers include Paul Blanck, Albert Mann, Salzmann-Thomann, Pierre Sparr, Domaine Weinbach and Jean-Jacques Ziegler-Mauler.
