Schlossberg (Alsace)

One of the Alsace (Haut-Rhin) sites classified as Grand Cru within the Alsace Grand Cru appellation, the first to be classified in 1975. It was already mentioned in the 15th century. In 1928, long before the later appellation regulations, the winegrowers there imposed quality-enhancing production restrictions. The vineyards cover around 80 hectares of vines at an altitude of 230 to 350 metres above sea level on gravelly soils in the municipalities of Kientzheim and Kaysersberg. Mostly Riesling is cultivated here, as well as the varieties Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Muscat Blanc. Well-known producers are Paul Blanck, Albert Mann, Salzmann-Thomann, Pierre Sparr, Domaine Weinbach and Jean-Jacques Ziegler-Mauler.
