The winery is located in the municipality of Stratzing in the Kremstal wine-growing region of Lower Austria. The family has been growing grapes since 1865. A vaulted cellar still in use is 350 years old. The vineyards cover 15 hectares of vines in Stratzing, in mountain terraces around Senftenberg and around the town of Krems. They are planted with the white wine varieties Grüner Veltliner (main variety with 7 ha), Riesling, Chardonnay, Müller-Thurgau, Neuburger and Gelber Muskateller, as well as with the red wine varieties Zweigelt and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards are cultivated according to the KIP principle (controlled and integrated production). The declared aim of the house is to produce wines that are as elegant and fruity as possible in the Prädikat range. Wines made from Grüner Veltliner are a speciality. Premium wines include various Grüner Veltliner and Riesling Kremstal DAC and Kremstal DAC Reserve, as well as the red wine cuvée Lena Marie (70% Zweigelt, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon). The wines are marketed with the initials "J.S." on a black bottle label. Schmid wines are offered in numerous top Austrian restaurants and served at state banquets. Around 80,000 bottles of wine are produced annually. The winery is a member of the Winzervereinigung Traditionsweingüter Österreich.
