The winery is located in Bolzano in the Italian wine-growing area of South Tyrol ( Trentino-South Tyrol region). The winery, rich in tradition, has been run by the family for over 6 centuries, starting in 1365. Today it is run by the 21st generation of the family, Florian Schmid. The vineyards cover nine hectares of own vineyards, where mainly Lagrein and Vernatsch varieties are cultivated. In addition, grapes from the communities of Entiklar, Missian, St. Georgen and Gries are supplied by contract winemakers from all over South Tyrol.

The red wine varieties Lagrein, Vernatsch (Schiava Grossa), Edelvernatsch (Schiava Gentile), Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, as well as the white wine varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc are cultivated. These are planted in the most suitable location in order to optimally exploit the quality potential of the soils. They are mostly planted using traditional pergola training, only the white wine varieties and some Lagrein plants are trained using wire frames (Guyot).

The quality-oriented yield reduction results in an average of 90 hectolitres/hectare. The wines are produced as DOC Südtiroler, Kalterersee and St. Magdalener. They are vinified in a fruity style typical of their origin and variety. Depending on the type of wine, the wines are matured in cellars up to two stokes deep at an ideal year-round temperature of 14 °Celsius, mostly in conventional wooden barrels and partly also in steel tanks. The premium wines of the house are Blauburgunder "Villa Schmid", Grieser Lagrein Riserva and Grieser Lagrein "Villa Schmid". Almost 100,000 bottles of wine are produced annually and marketed at the farm or through selected wine merchants. The winery is a member of the association "Weingüter Südtirols".
