The estate is located in the community Leiwen (Bernkastel area) in the German wine-growing region Moselle
, It was founded in the 1950s by the parents of today's owner Heinz Schmitt, who then took over in 1983 with 3.5 hectares of vineyard area. After training as a winegrower and cellar technician in Bad Kreuznach, he set early on the production of high quality dry wines. After visiting many wine regions around the world, he completed a two-year practice stay in Napa Valley, California. This resulted in the uncompromising focus of all measures in vineyard and cellar on the highest possible quality. He combines the experience gained with the traditional methods of European winemaking. The vineyards now comprise 23 hectares of vineyards in the individual layers Annaberg (Schweich) with some parcels of root-oriented vines, Altärchen
(Klüsserath), monastery garden (Leiwen), Laurentiuslay
(Köwerich and Leiwen), Maximiner Herrenberg
(Neumagen), as well as Blattenberg and Zellerberg (Mehring). The grapes are pressed gently and the must is then filtered. The fermentation takes place spontaneously in both stainless steel tanks and in traditional wooden barrels with the natural yeasts from the vineyard. Since the year 2002 passengers of the first class of the German airline Lufthansa wines are served by Heinz Schmitt. Every year around 150,000 bottles of wine and around 10,000 bottles of sparkling wine are produced.
