Schützenhaus

single vineyard in the municipality of Hattenheim in the German wine-growing region of Rheingau. The name suggests a guardian's hut, which was supposed to provide protection from bad weather for the "Traubeschütz"(vineyard guardian) in autumn. This guardian drove away the grape-nibbling starlings and other birds with a shotgun. It is located at the western entrance to Hattenheim, extends to the road to Hallgarten and Eberbach Monastery and runs slightly uphill to the south-southwest. At the same time, the elongated site runs a little to the west and is thus protected from cold easterly winds. The vineyards, which are mainly south to south-west facing, at an altitude of 100 to 150 metres above sea level with a slope of only 10%, cover 52 hectares of vineyards. The deep slate soils with loess and loess loam have a high water storage capacity. The main varieties cultivated here are Riesling and Pinot Noir. The wineries Barth Norbert, Bausch Hans, Georg Müller Stiftung and Ress Balthasar, for example, have shares in the site.
