Schuyler

The red grape variety is an interspecific new breeding between Zinfandel (American variety of Tribidrag) x Ontario. It was named after Philip Schuyler (1733-1804), the American general in the War of Independence and New York's representative in the US Senate. Synonyms are Boskoop Blue, Boskoop's Glory, Boskoop Glorie, Glorie de Boskoop, New York 13920 and Rote Jupp. Genes from Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera are included. The hybrid was crossed in 1932 by the breeders G. D. Oberle and Richard Wellington at the Vine Breeding Institute of Cornell University in Geneva (New York State). The vine was a crossing partner for the new varieties Cayuga White, Horizon and Orlando Seedless. It is used in the USA for the production of table grapes, grape juice and simple red wines for quick consumption. The latter show a slight foxtone. No stocks were recorded in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
