Scion

Term (also noble eye, noble growth, noble wood, noble shoot, top, prop, shoot, brushwood) for the upper part of a vine in a grafting with an eye (bud), which is grafted onto a rootstock (rootstock). The scion alone determines the character of the new vine (graft vine) and thus also of the wine. The scions are obtained in nurseries. A grafted shoot still without roots is called a blind vine. If it is then planted in the ground from May to June (northern hemisphere) or 6 months later (southern hemisphere), it will sprout in the same year. If it is planted from June to August, it will not sprout until the following year. See also under Vine.
