This white grape variety is a new cross between Diagalves x Fernão Pires. The cross was made in 1951 in Portugal by Leão Ferreira. The same parents also produced the new variety Rio Grande. The early-maturing, high-yielding vine is susceptible to the wood diseases esca and eutypiosis, but resistant to fungal diseases. It produces white wines rich in alcohol, with moderate acidity and a fruity aroma. It is grown in the Ribatejo, Lisboa and Azores (Pico) areas. In 2016, 471 hectares of vines were reported with a decreasing trend (Kym Anderson).
