Severny

The red grape variety is an interspecific new variety between Seyanets Malengra x Amurensis. Snonyms are Severnii, Severnyi and Severnyi Muscat 7 and Siewiernyj. Genes of Vitis amurensis and Vitis vinifera are included. The hybrid was crossed in 1936 by the breeder Ya. I. Potapenko and E. Zakharova in Rostov (Russia). By the way, the varieties Mitschurinski and Zarya Severa were created with the same parents. The variety was a cross-breeding partner in the new varieties of Blütenmuskateller, Cabernet Severny, Fioletovy Ranny, Golubok, Muskat Donskoi, Negritienok, Ovidiopolsky, Saperavi Severny, Severny Gyulyabi, Tsvetochny and Vidvizhenets. It is an all-female grape variety. It is therefore cultivated for fertilization together with other hermaphroditic varieties. The very early-ripening, fast-growing vine is extremely resistant to winter frost. It is mainly grown in Russia, but also in the US state of New York (Finger Lakes) and in Canada. In 2016, however, no stocks were recorded (statistics Kym Anderson). There are also two new white varieties called Severny Bely and Severny Gyulyabi.
