Seyve Joannes

Joannes Seyve (1900-1966) was the son of the famous French vine grower Bertille Seyve (1864-1939), who worked at the famous Seyve-Villard breeding farm in Saint-Vallier on the Drôme in the Rhône Valley. Under the name Joannes Seyve plus serial number, the VIVC catalogue (Geilweilerhof) contains over 50 interspecific new varieties crossed from Seibel and/or Seyve vines (Seibel x Seibel or Seyve x Seibel). These were complex crosses of American vines like Vitis aestivalis, Vitis cinerea, Vitis lincecumii, Vitis riparia and Vitis rupestris as well as European Vitis vinifera. The Joannes Seyve vines served as the base material for further new varieties. Among the best known are Joannes Seyve, Joannes Seyve 26-205, one of the very few to be given the resounding name Chambourcin, and Joannes Seyve 23-416.
