Shirvanshahy

The red grape variety comes from Azerbaijan. It is named after a local Islamic ruling dynasty. Synonyms are Shirvan Shahi, Shirvan Shakhi, Shirvanshaly and Sirvansahi. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, she is the result of a presumably natural cross between Chirvan Chakhi x Alii Tierskii. However, this is based on only 17 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The medium-ripening vine produces dark-coloured, full-bodied red wines with ageing potential, from which often spiced wines with the "Kurdamir" designation of origin are produced. It is cultivated in the Kurdamir region in the centre of the country. In 2016, however, no stocks were recorded (statistics Kym Anderson).
