Singerriedel

Riede (site) in the east of the municipality of Spitz a. d. Donau in the Lower Austrian wine-growing region of Wachau. The steeply terraced vineyards, which are supported by dry stone walls, face west to south at an altitude of 215 to 303 metres above sea level, have a slope of up to 70% and cover 6.5 hectares. They lie on crystalline marble with gneiss-interspersed weathered soil with calcareous sediments, some with oyster shells, and overlying silicate-rich brown earth. Cold air flows down from the 1,000-metre-high Jauerling, resulting in strong temperature fluctuations between sunny days and cold nights. The acidic paragneiss in the soil makes for extremely mineral, smoky and spicy wines. The white wine varieties Neuburger and Riesling are mainly cultivated here, as well as Grüner Veltliner in the lower area. Due to the steepness, only laborious manual work is required here. Shares in the vineyard are held, for example, by the wineries Hirtzberger Franz, Gritsch Mauritiushof, Hofstätter and Rixinger, as well as vintners from Domäne Wachau.
