From 1852 onwards, viticultural information trips took him to the Rhine and Moselle, and from 1857 to southwestern Switzerland, Lake Geneva, Tyrol and Austria. From 1862 he held the position of an expert for viticulture in the Königl. Centralstelle für Landwirtschaft in Württemberg. From 1866 he was appointed to the 1st Board of Directors of the Königl.-Wttbg. Weinbauschule in Weinsberg. After a visit to August-Wilhelm Freiherr von Babo (1827-1894) in Klosterneuburg near Vienna, the school of viticulture was opened in Weinsberg in 1868. Single acquired extensive practical knowledge and rendered great services to the care and improvement of viticulture and grape breeding in Württemberg.
