Sklava

The white grape variety originates from Greece. Synonyms are Sklaba, Sklabes, Sklabos, Sklaves and Skalvos. The name means "slave". The ancestry (parentage) is unknown. Despite seemingly suggestive synonyms, it must not be confused with the two Italian varieties Alionza or Vernatsch (Schiava). The vigorous and high-yielding vine produces low-alcohol white wines with fresh acidity. It is cultivated in the eastern Peloponnese. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
