Solonis

The vine is an interspecific, probably spontaneous cross between American wild vines of the species Riparia x Longii. Synonyms are Pubescens, Riparia Pubescens, Riparia Rouge, Robusta, Solonis de Laval, Solonis du Mineur, Solonis Robusta, Solonis Tomenteux and Vitis Riparia Pubescent. Genes of Vitis longii (Vitis acerifolia) and Vitis riparia are included. The hybrid was discovered by the botanist Georg Engelmann (1809-1884) in the USA in 1868 and then selected in Germany in 1886. It is an all-female grape variety. It is mainly used as a rootstock. The variety was a crossing partner in the new varieties Dr. Deckerrebe, Grisette and Othello Solonis. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson Kym statistics).
