South Carolina

The state on the southern Atlantic coast with the capital Columbia was one of the 13 founding states of the USA. Around the year 1680, Huguenots expelled from France settled here (and also in North Carolina) and brought with them their knowledge of viticulture. Among other things, Nicholas Herbemont (1771-1839) was active on a large scale in Columbia as a vine grower. In 1816, the famous historic variety Isabella was discovered near Dorchester. Hybrids and varieties of the American species Vitis labrusca and Vitis rotundifolia are cultivated in large quantities. There is not yet an AVA classified area and there are only a few production companies, these are Carolina Vineyards Winery, La Belle Amie Vineyard, Montmorenci Vineyards and Truluck Vineyards.
