English term for sparkling wine (sparkling = sparkling, shiny); the abbreviated form sparkling is also used in some cases. The name is not origin-protected and is also used internationally, including in Europe. According to legal regulations in the USA, the second fermentation of a sparkling wine produced using the Champagne method must take place "in a glass container with a volume of less than one gallon" (3.785 litres).
