Spice Route

The "Spice Route Wine Company" winery is located in the South African wine growing district of Swartland. It was only founded in 1997 by the famous South African wine author John Platter, the colourful wine merchant and wine book author Jabulani Ntshangase, Gyles H. Webb (owner of Thelema Mountain in Stellenbosch) and the owner Charles Back (who also owns the Fairview Winery in the Paarl District) and developed into a cult winery within only three years. Winemaker Eben Sabie experiments with various fermentation and ageing techniques. He is also an avid surfer and organized the "Viners Surf Classic", a competition for surfing wine freaks. The 200 hectares of vineyards are planted with 65% red and 35% white varieties. The grape varieties cultivated are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc (Steen), Merlot, Pinotage, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Viognier. The wines of the "Flagship-Line" are aged for 18 months in French and Russian barriques. There are wines from Merlot, Pinotage and Syrah. About 300,000 bottles of wine are produced annually.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
