Springfield Estate

The winery is situated on the banks of the Breede River in the South African wine-growing district of Robertson (Breede River Valley region). It was founded by the French Huguenot Bruères family (later renamed Bruwer), who immigrated in 1688, under the name "Klipdrift" (engl. "stone shifting"). Today it is run in the fourth generation by Abrie Bruwer and his sister Jeanette. Due to the low rainfall, artificial irrigation is necessary, but this is done in doses. Natural, gentle viticulture is practised. For example, snails are controlled by ducks, natural yeasts are used, the harvest is partly carried out at night and the wines are partly bottled unfiltered and unadulterated. The vineyards cover 160 vineyards. Many of the originally north-south oriented vines were replanted in an east-west direction to protect them from the extreme sunlight. White and red wine varieties are cultivated in equal parts. These are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Colombard, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. The premium wines include the Sauvignon Blanc "Life from Stone", the Chardonnay "Wild Yeast" fermented with natural yeasts as well as the red wine cuvée "Work of Time" (Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot).
