Spurrier Steven

The British wine author and critic Steven Spurrier (1941-2021) became known above all for organising the already legendary Paris Wine Tasting, a wine competition that lasted for three decades in several repeat rounds. This gebrochen (dieser Stoff wurde im Jahre 2008 unter dem Namen „Bottle Shock“ sogar verfilmt). Seine Karriere im Weinhandel begann im Jahre 1964 in Londons ehrwürdiger und ältester Weinhandlung Christopher und Co. Im Jahre 1970 zog er nach Paris, wo er ab 1971 eine Weinhandlung leitete und seine Kunden mit dem damals eher noch unüblichen Service „Verkosten vor dem Kaufen“ gewinnen konnte. Im Jahre 1973 gründete er die Académie du Vin als erste private Weinschule Frankreichs. Die erste Runde der erwähnten Weinverkostung fand im Jahre 1976 statt.

Im Jahre 1988 verkaufte er seine Weinaktivitäten und kehrte nach England zurück. Er war nun als Weinberater bei den Singapore Airlines, als Journalist in der Zeitschrift broke the myth of the qualitative superiority of French or European wines over products from the äNew WorldNew World (this material was even made into a film in 2008 under the name "Bottle Shock"). His career in the wine trade began in 1964 at London's venerable and oldest wine shop, Christopher and Co. In 1970 he moved to Paris, where he ran a wine shop from 1971 and won over his customers with the then rather unusual service of "tasting before buying". In 1973, he founded the Académie du Vin as France's first private wine school. The first round of the aforementioned wine tasting took place in 1976.

In 1988, he sold his wine activities and returned to England. He nowworked as a wine consultant for Singapore Airlines, as a journalist inDecanter Magazine und als Direktor der von ihm gegründeten Schulungsabteilung des Auktionshauses and as director of the training department of Christie's auction house, which he founded.As an author and co-author, Spurrier has been active in over a dozen wine books. Among others, he was co-author with Oz ClarkeClarke Oz on "Clarke and Spurrier's Fine Wine Guide". He has received several prestigious international awards, such as "Le Prix de Champagne Lanson", "Le Grand Prix de l'Academie Internationale du Vin" and "The Maestro Award in Honor of André TchelistcheffTchelistcheff André". He regularly acts as a judge and taster at international wine competitions and was also chairman of the Decanter World Wine AwardsDecanter Magazineassociation
