The winery is located in the municipality of Nierstein (Nierstein area) in the German wine-growing region of Rheinhessen. It was founded in 1920, but it was not until 1985 that it was given its present name after an old ironworks belonging to the former owner MAN. MAN sold the winery to the entrepreneur Detlev Meyer in 2005. The estate also includes the Heyl zu Herrnsheim vineyard. Both wineries moved into the renovated buildings of the former Gustav Adolf Schmitt winery at the end of 2006. Must and wine are now only moved there by gravity. Highlights are the fermentation cellar with the most gentle technology and the new vinotheque. Initially, the two wineries remained separate in terms of production, but in 2008 it was decided to merge the two. Heyl zu Herrnsheim, however, remains as a wine line. The winery is run by Dirk Würtz (managing partner). Sebastian Strub is responsible as cellar master.

Einzellage Orbel

The vineyards cover 40 hectares of vines in the Nierstein single vineyard sites of Hipping, Ölberg, Orbel, Pettenthal and in the sole ownership Zehnmorgen. The Bruderberg site, also in sole ownership, is only used for the Heyl zu Herrnsheim brand. They are 80% planted with the main variety Riesling, as well as Pinot Noir, Blaufränkisch, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and the rare variety Gelber Orléans. The vineyards are cultivated using biodynamic methods in accordance with the guidelines of the DEMETER organic association, which have been certified since 2018. The wines are fermented spontaneously and, depending on the wine type, aged in stainless steel tanks, in large wooden bar rels or in barriques. The large product range is divided into the lines Grosse Gewächse, Ortsweine and Gutsweine in accordance with the VDP classification model. In years when the weather is suitable, noble sweet wines are also pressed. Around 220,000 bottles of wine are produced annually. The winery is a member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates).
