St. Jost

single vineyard in the municipality of Steeg in the valley of the Münzbach at a distance of about 1.5 kilometres from the Rhine in the German wine-growing region of the Middle Rhine. The name goes back to the former chapel dedicated to St. Jodocus of Aquitaine (620-669) in the churchyard between Bacharach and Steeg. The south-facing vineyards at an altitude of 120 to 220 metres above sea level with a slope of 50 to 60% cover more than eight hectares of vineyards on medium-heavy weathered clay slate soil (Hunsrück slate) covered with a layer of pastel-coloured drifting sand. Riesling is the main grape grown here. The Bastian Friedrich and Ratzenberger wineries, for example, have shares in the site.
