St. Michael-Eppan

The wine cooperative is located in the wine-growing community of Appiano on the South Tyrolean Wine Route (region Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy). The winery was founded in 1907 by 27 winegrowers. Today it comprises 340 winegrower families who cultivate 380 hectares of vineyards. Anton Zublasing is responsible as chairman, Günther Neumair as managing director and Hans Terzer as cellar master and oenologist. The winery is considered a pioneer, already in the 1980s there was an increasing switch from Vernatsch to a wide variety of white wines, the yields reduced and new types of expansion ( Barrique ) experiments.

The majority of the vineyards are located in the municipality of Appiano. The most famous are in Eppan Berg, with the well-known location of Schulthaus, and along the wine route to Kaltern. They are 70% white wine Pinot Blanc ( Pinot Blanc ), Pinot Grigio ( Pinot gris ) Chardonnay, Sauvignon ( Sauvignon Blanc ) and Gewurztraminer, as well as in peripheral locations Riesling and Müller Thurgau planted. The main red wine variety is Schiava followed by Pinot Noir ( Pinot Noir ), as well as those cultivated in warm locations outside of Appiano Lagrein. Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc and Merlot, Great attention is paid to the right location for each variety, a targeted reduction in yield, as well as optimal maturity of the grapes.

The wines are differentiated according to locations and grape varieties and, depending on the type of wine, aged in stainless steel tanks, in traditional oak barrels or in French barriques. The wide range of products is divided into three lines: Sanct Valentin (top-of-the-range), selection (single-wine) and classic (traditional) typical of the variety aged wines). The flagship of the house is the white wine blend "Appius" (Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc) from yields with a maximum of 35 hl / ha. The wine is aged for 12 months in barrels and three years in the lees in the steel tank. The annual production amounts to 2.5 million bottles, which are 70% in Italy and 30% are sold abroad. A total of around 35 countries are supplied worldwide.
