Name (German: "Stapeltank" or "Stapelfass") for cube-shaped stainless steel tanks from the Australian company AUSVAT. The system was developed by Peter Warren. The tanks are used for the fermentation and ageing of wines. The great advantage of this shape is the space-saving stacking option. The tank shown in the picture has a volume of 900 litres. Using an appropriate technique, oak boards (inner staves) can be installed in the side walls as an alternative for barrique ageing. This also enables a largely similar function with oxygen access to a real barrique barrel. A similar cube-shaped container system developed in Germany is rebarriQue.
For alternatives for barrique ageing, see Wood chips and lists of containers under Barrel and cask. For the production of alcoholic beverages, see Champagne (sparkling wines), Distillation (distillates), Speciality wines, Spirits (types), Winemaking (wines and wine types) and Wine law (wine law issues).
