The red grape variety originates from Greece. Synonyms are Ampelakiotiko, Ampelakiotiko Mavro and Stavromavro. The parentage is unknown. The medium to late ripening vine yields spicy red wines with moderate alcohol and acidity. It is cultivated in the Thessaly region at the foot of Mount Olympus, where it is permitted with the Krassato and Xinomavro varieties in the POP red wine Rapsani. In 2016, there were 0.3 hectares of vines, with a strong downward trend; 2000 years earlier, there were 104 hectares (Kym Anderson statistics).
