The "Ernst Steffens" winery is located in the municipality of Zell-Merl (Bernkastel area) in the German Moselle wine-growing region. The family has been growing grapes since 1648. The farm is run by Paul-Werner Steffens and his wife Elsbeth. The vineyards cover almost three hectares in the Nonnengarten (Briedel), Burglay-Felsen (Zell), Adler, Fettgarten, Königslay and Stephansberg (Merl) sites. They are mainly planted with white wine varieties. This is mainly Riesling, as well as Kerner, Bacchus and Müller-Thurgau, and the only red wine variety is Dornfelder. Particular emphasis is placed on consistently good care of the vineyards, selective hand-harvesting and gentle careful vinification in large oak barrels. The Rieslings are offered in dry, semi-dry, "lieblich" and noble sweet, and in suitable years ice wines are also pressed. A bottle-fermented sparkling wine is also produced.
